Independent mechanics mostly bitching about how little they make. But some real interesting tidbits on how dealership/garages work. I know a few of you here are professionals but this is new info for people like me or confirms stuff I've heard or suspected. Like I didn't know factory warranty work paid so little.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
For example, they're discussing the recent TV show about mechanic ripoffs:

I've been a technician at a dealership since 2006..... for ALL that we have to know, the thousands we have to spend on tools, and the physical things we do (transmissions are heavy) the pay is shit.
You like cars? Ok, do a left engine speed sensor on a Aston Martin Rapide..... yes you do have remove the chassis from the body and do a ton of paper work. Pay? It is warranty so you only get 6 hours. Oh yeah, you have all those other cars that are due this week also so hurry up. (3 days later the job is done for 6 hours pay)
Or, you can be a regular mechanic at some random place fixing cars with cheap aftermarket parts and get paid cash for work that is (meh.... it's better than it was)

US mechanics make the same wages now as they did in the 80's

That was a depressing read. It just reminded me that my industry is a joke and I don't make enough money. That being said, Mercedes warranty pays *fairly* compared to pretty much everyone else, if you have a good warranty clerk. I also consider myself to be one of the good guys and my shop to better than most. My pay is not terrible, but considering my aptitude (the aptitude of many good diagnosticians) I could have made 2-3 times the money doing something else. I justify this by telling myself that I enjoy my work and I never feel slimy because I'm honest.

The old guy who own's the shop I trust and frequent; his kid worked there and then left for Oregon to get into forestry. I had always figured the kid would take over his dad's business. The kid was an Oppo, he had some cool cars, Scirroccos, Corrodos, original GTI. Now I understand why he left.

It's hard finding honest quality workers. I'm glad you're out there. I was up on my roof today noticing all the little details that weren't done right by the roofers. Things like the vent covers that were nailed at the bottom edges and then the nail heads caulked over. Instead of the correct way of nailing the vent cover under a shingle so you wouldn't have to caulk. Flashing the stone chimney with 4 pieces of metal and then caulked, not stepped and grouted into the stone. So now I have to go up every year to recaulk the eventual caulk failures.
